Detritus worms belong to the family Naididae — a group of oligochaete worms closely related to earthworms. Like earthworms, they are hermaphrodites (each individual has both male and female organs). The family includes roughly 800 species, but you don’t need to identify the exact one. Just know that they are harmless detritus worms, not parasites.
How to Identify Detritus Worms
What do detritus worms look like?
- Size: 0.1–0.5 inches (rarely up to 1 inch) — visible to the naked eye but small.
- Color: White or translucent — almost transparent in low light.
- Body: Thin, segmented, thread‑like — like a moving piece of white string.
- Surface movement: Crawl like earthworms, slowly contracting and stretching.
- Water movement: Fast, snake‑like wriggling, often swimming in a zigzag.
- Where to find them: Mostly in the substrate or filter, but they can climb onto glass, drift in the water column, or hide under rocks and driftwood.
Common Myths About Detritus Worms
- Myth: “Detritus worms are parasites.” — Fact: They are detritivores. They eat waste, not living tissue.
- Myth: “They will infect my fish.” — Fact: They don’t infect anything. They’re not parasitic.
- Myth: “I need to use chemicals to get rid of them.” — Fact: You don’t. Vacuuming and feeding less are more effective and safer.
Behavior of Detritus Worms
Detritus worms are simple creatures with predictable habits. Here’s what you need to know about how they live and move in your tank:
- Activity: Nocturnal. They hide in the substrate, filter media, or under decorations during the day and come out at night to feed. During the day they stay buried or hidden.
- Feeding: Detritivores — they eat only decomposing organic matter (uneaten food, fish waste, dead plant material, mulm). They do not eat living tissue.
- Habitat: Most of the time they stay in the substrate or inside the filter, where food accumulates. You’ll rarely see them unless numbers are high or conditions change.
- Why they swim: When oxygen levels drop at the bottom, they migrate upwards toward the surface to breathe. That’s why you see them floating or swimming in the water column — it means the water is poorly oxygenated or the substrate is too dirty.
- Population spikes: A sudden explosion in numbers is almost always caused by overfeeding or poor maintenance. It’s a warning sign, not a disease.
If you see hundreds of them out in the open during the day, something is wrong. Check your filtration, oxygen levels, and feeding routine. In a healthy tank, you may never even notice them.
How Do Detritus Worms Get Into Your Tank?
Detritus worms are almost inevitable in established aquariums. They are excellent hitchhikers, so, it is very easy to accidentally introduce them into the tank, for example:
- Hitchhiking on live plants. Eggs or tiny worms cling to leaves and roots. Quarantining new plants helps, but even then, they often slip through.
- Hitchhiking on new fish or in their bag water. The water from the pet store can carry eggs or small worms. Always discard the bag water — never pour it into your tank.
- Hitchhiking in substrate or decorations. If you transfer gravel, sand, or hardscape from another tank, you’re almost certainly moving worms with it.
Once they’re in, they stay. They don’t need a special trigger — they just exist. Most mature tanks have a small population of detritus worms living in the substrate. So, if you are running your tank for a year or more it is very likely that you have a detritus worm colony in the tank. Maybe you do not know about it yet. 🙂
But population explosions don’t happen by accident. When they swarm, it’s always caused by one of these:
- Overfeeding. Extra food = extra worm food. Simple as that.
- Poor maintenance. Skipped water changes and rare gravel vacuuming allow waste to accumulate.
- Low oxygen. Stagnant water or a clogged filter forces them out of the substrate and into the open.
So yes, they got in by accident. But they multiplied because of you.
Are Detritus Worms Dangerous to Shrimp, Fish, or Snails?
No. Detritus worms are completely harmless to all tank inhabitants. They cannot bite, sting, or infect your fish, shrimp, or snails. They don’t carry diseases. They don’t parasitize anything.
In fact, they’re beneficial — they eat waste, leftover food, and dead plant material that would otherwise rot and pollute the water. They’re part of a healthy cleanup crew.
However, there is one indirect risk. If their population explodes to massive numbers and they suddenly die off (for example, from chemical treatment), the rotting corpses can spike ammonia levels and suffocate your livestock. The worms themselves aren’t dangerous — but killing them all at once can be.
Also, some fish will eat them. If you have small fish like guppies, tetras, or corydoras, they’ll snack on detritus worms without any problem.

How to Get Rid of Detritus Worms
First, don’t panic. You don’t need to eliminate them completely — just reduce their numbers. In a healthy tank, a small population is normal and even beneficial.
How to know if you have too many: If you see them everywhere — swimming in the water column, crawling on the glass, and sticking out of the substrate in large numbers — it’s time to act. A few here and there? Leave them alone.
1. Vacuum the Substrate (Most Effective)
This is your #1 tool. Detritus worms live and breed in the substrate. Gravel vacuuming removes worms, eggs, and the food they eat (waste, uneaten food, mulm).
- Use a gravel vacuum to clean the substrate thoroughly.
- Focus on areas with visible waste accumulation.
- Repeat weekly until the population drops.

2. Water Changes
After vacuuming, do a water change — up to 50% if the tank is heavily infested. This removes worms floating in the water column and improves oxygen levels.
⚠️ Warning for shrimp keepers: Large or frequent water changes can cause molting problems. Do it gradually if you have shrimp.
3. Reduce Feeding
Overfeeding is the #1 cause of population explosions. If there’s no excess food, the worms can’t multiply.
- Feed only what your fish or shrimp can consume in 2–3 minutes (for fish) or 2–3 hours (for shrimp).
- Remove any uneaten food after that time.

4. Improve Filtration and Oxygen
Worms leave the substrate when oxygen drops. Better water flow and a clean filter help maintain oxygen levels and reduce the need for worms to migrate upward.
- Clean or replace filter media (in tank water, not tap water).
- Add an air stone or powerhead for better circulation.
5. Add Natural Predators (Biological Control)
Some fish eat detritus worms. This can help keep numbers in check, but not a solution on its own.
Fish that will eat them: Guppies, Endlers, Neon tetras, Harlequin Rasboras, Corydoras, Bettas, Mollies, Angelfish.
⚠️ Warning: These fish may also eat shrimplets. Use only if you don’t have breeding shrimp or are willing to accept losses.
6. CO2 and Temperature (Not Recommended)
Some aquarists use CO2 or heat to drive worms out of the substrate, making them easier to siphon. Both methods stress livestock and can be dangerous.
- CO2: Injecting CO2 depletes oxygen, forcing worms to the surface. But it also affects your fish and shrimp.
- Temperature: Raising tank temperature by 15°F (~8°C) shocks worms — but also shocks everything else.
Skip these unless you have experience and a spare tank to move livestock.
7. Chemical Treatments (Strongly Discouraged)
I don’t recommend this. Ever. But let me explain why:
⚠️ Why you should NOT use chemicals against detritus worms:
Products like No-Planaria, Fenbendazole (Panacur), PraziPro, or AAP Dyacide will kill detritus worms and planaria. But then you have thousands of dead worms rotting in the substrate. Over the next 1–2 weeks, that decay releases massive amounts of ammonia — enough to kill your fish, shrimp, or snails.
I learned this the hard way. I used Fenbendazole once. Lost half my shrimp colony to the ammonia spike that followed. Vacuuming the substrate afterward helped, but the damage was already done.
If you absolutely must use medication, vacuum the substrate heavily first and do multiple water changes afterward. But honestly? Just fix the root causes and avoid the risk entirely. Summary: Vacuum, water change, feed less, clean your filter. That’s it. No magic. No chemicals. Just good maintenance.
How to Prevent Detritus Worm Explosions
- Quarantine new plants. Dip them in a mild bleach solution or potassium permanganate before adding to your tank. Or just keep them in a separate container for a week.
- Discard bag water. Never pour water from the pet store into your tank. It can carry eggs, parasites, and other unwanted hitchhikers.
- Feed sparingly. A hungry fish is healthier than an overfed one. Feed small amounts and remove leftovers.
- Vacuum regularly. Don’t wait for a population explosion. Make gravel vacuuming part of your routine maintenance.
- Keep your filter clean. A dirty filter is a breeding ground for worms. Clean it in tank water (not tap water) every 4–6 weeks.
Detritus Worms vs Planaria vs Camallanus: How to Tell Them Apart
Aquarists often confuse these three. Here’s how to tell them apart quickly:
- Detritus worms: Thin, white, wriggle fast, swim freely. Harmless.
- Planaria: Flat, triangular head, slow gliding on glass. Dangerous to shrimp.
- Camallanus: Thread-like, pink/red, protrudes from fish anus. Internal parasite — treat fish immediately.

I would like to say that i have found detritus worms many times. There are currently many living in my infusoria culture, a few in my now empty but will-be shrimp tank, and sometimes a few in my fish tank.
I will note that my corydora fry showed no interest in eating one that was wiggling around in the water column, but its possible it got eaten when it landed.

oh help I had a second aquarium with 4 shrimps and 3 snails the snails gave birth and made about 50 eggs after a while the aquarium was full of worms I decided to change them to my other aquarium where I have about 11 fish everything was fine for a few days until many worms spread again in this aquarium and unfortunately all these snails gave birth again, I don’t know what to do😭😭

I have always been a fanatic when it comes to weekly water changes and the cleaning of my 55-gal aquarium that house’s my 2 Mollies, 1 fat-head minnow, 1 Rosy Red Minnow and one 2 year-old African Side Neck Turtle. Last week I lost one of my minnows and I believed that this caused the surviving Minnow to become depressed and lonely (he won’t hang with no Mollies) so I went to my local PetSmart and bought 4 Rosy Red minnows and 2 more Mollies. No sooner did I add the new fish to my tank that I spotted my first worm squiggling to the surface. I tried to net it out and believe I was successful despite their small size. I googled a description of what I saw in my tank once I found another 10 more or so which I netted out too. Your article is what came up from my search and reading it set my mind at ease. I am sure I got these damn things from my new fish and it’s all my fault for not quarantining when I knew better. The bright side is that I don’t use substrate and though I tend to overfeed, I vacuum out my tank and wipe down the bottom and sides once a week religiously. Since these uninvited guests will have a tough time trying to exist in the environment I provide for my Turtle and my fish, and since you sayl they are harmless, I will be able to sleep after all tonight. I don’t consider myself to be new to aquariums at all but I think that because of the rigid cleaning habit I set up when it came to maintaining my aquarium 2 years ago, I never had the unpleasant time of seeing these critters in my tank. I have a Betta fish. Noticed those worms are in the tank or something like them.
Question is my Betta fish started to look plump not sure why as I’m careful with his food intake, since noticed he even more plumper, doesn’t seem to be swimbladder or dropsy as he swims normally. Now he seems quite swollen on one side under his side fin.

First of all, detritus worms’re totally harmless and actually a natural part of a healthy tank. Some Bettas do snack on them, but it’s highly unlikely that eating them would cause the bloating you’re describing.
The real concern is the swelling on your Betta’s side. Actually, that’s not typical for just being full or constipated. Swelling on only one side often points to something more specific, like a cyst in Bettas). Internal growths can push on his organs and cause that asymmetrical bulge.
Here are a few things you can try and keep an eye on:
1. Stop feeding for 2-3 days. If it’s just severe constipation, a short fast often helps reduce swelling.
2. Try a deshelled, boiled pea. If the swelling is even on both sides, this can help clear a blockage. But for a one-sided lump, this is less likely to be the fix.
If the swelling doesn’t go down after a few days of fasting and the methods above, it points more strongly to health problems, sorry.
